Tullahoma Arts Council Meets Friday

Persons interested in creating a Tullahoma Arts Council will meet Friday (May 3) from 11AM to noon at the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center.

Shannon Ford, director of community arts development for the Tennessee Arts Commission, will attend the meeting.

According to Tullahoma community coordinator Winston Brooks, the agenda will include the following topics for discussion:

1. Comparison of different legal formations of the council

2. What to offer for membership?

3. How can we engage students?

4. When can we apply for Tennessee Arts Commission grants?

5. Will the Art Council create more money for existing organizations or less?

Tullahoma Mayor Lane Curlee is pushing for the formation of a Tullahoma Arts Council to coordinate the marketing of Tullahoma as a hub for the arts in south middle Tennessee.

A kick-off meeting was held in March at which Tennessee Arts Commission executive director Anne Pope spoke.

Matinees Added For The Little Mermaid

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. keeps luring families to the Arts Center of Cannon County. Although the regular run of the musical was to end this weekend, due to a “tremendous demand for tickets,” three additional matinee performances have been added.

There is still some limited availability for the February 15 and 16 7:30PM performances.

Note to TFAC: Elvis Has Left The Building

Please update your website!

The Tullahoma Fine Arts Center’s website still touts “It’s Elvis’s birthday, come celebrate with us!” The event was held January 12.

Worse than the TFAC having an out-of-date website, is that the best exhibit the center has had in two years is being under-promoted.

On display now are the watercolors of Kay Foote and the pen and ink drawings of Linda Heath Overton. A reception for the artists was held last Saturday. And the website still is stuck on the King’s birthday.

Let me check again . . . refresh my browser . . . empty my cache . . . try another browser . . . hmmmm . . . Hail to the King!

Too bad.—these two accomplished artists deserve better. Thankfully their artwork does not fall under the center’s “fun and funky” art? banner. Foote and Overton both demonstrate considerable skill as they offer refreshing views of the world around them.

TFAC is open from 9AM to 5PM, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday—well at least according to the schedule posted on the center’s site.

Tullahoma Mayor Pushes For New Arts Council

Tullahoma Mayor Lane Curlee is pushing for the creation of Tullahoma Arts Council “to leverage all our arts and make Tullahoma even more of an arts rich community and a regional arts destination.”

A “kick-off” meeting for the council will be held on Friday at the Tullahoma Events Center, located at 205 NW Atlantic Street. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11:45AM.

Tennessee Arts Commission executive director Anne Pope will be the keynote speaker.

According to a press release from the City of Tullahoma, Pope will speak about the benefits of a thriving art community, creating a Tullahoma Arts Council and why this is important for the city.

“I am honored to speak to the citizens of Tullahoma,” said Pope. “A vibrant, engaged and active arts community is a key element of economic development. It creates a livable city, and attracts tourists and complementary businesses to the area.”

The meeting is open to the public

“An arts-rich community is an attractive place to work and live. Also, students who are active in the arts do better across all disciplines of study. Let’s invest in the arts in Tullahoma by supporting the performing, cultural, visual, dramatic, graphic and culinary arts,” said Curlee.

“Other cities have been successful creating thriving arts communities, which in turn create destinations for locals and visitors,” said Curlee. “A thriving arts community is attractive to young families and is an important component of our strategy to grow Tullahoma.”

For planning purposes, please contact the Tullahoma’s community coordinator, Winston Brooks, and let him know if you can make it by calling 455-2648 or emailing wbrooks@tullahomatn.gov.

Rain-Rain Brings Drip-Drip

Several days of rain have brought out the buckets at the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center.

Leaks have appeared in the center’s Members Gallery and other areas in the Baillet House section of the center. The problem was discussed at last week’s TFAC Board of Directors meeting.

Due to hail damage, a new roof was installed on the facility last summer.

The center was established in 1968 in a renovated house on South Jackson Street, which had been built by the Baillet family around 1870. A new addition that contains the center’s main gallery and classrooms was built in 1992.

Tullahoma Fine Arts Increases Member Fees

In an effort to bring in more money, the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center is increasing its membership fees for the first time in years. The TFAC Board of Directors are also eliminating the general 10% discount members have been receiving on purchases from the center.

During their monthly meeting on Thursday night, the board voted to increase fees by 40% for most of its members, beginning in February.

Members who are senior citizens will be able to continue to pay $25 for individual memberships and $35 for family memberships. All other members will pay $35 for individuals and $50 for a family. The Center is also streamlining its sponsor classes by now only including a Patron class at $100 and corporate sponsorships at $500.

Members will now only receive a 10% discount on purchases of art during the opening night receptions for the center’s art shows. Members had been previously able to receive 10% off the art at anytime.

The next reception is scheduled for Saturday from 6 to 8PM. An Elvis themed party will be held, with the artwork of Nashville artists Darlene Shadden and “Miz Thang,” a self-taught folk artist from

Arts Council Proposed For Tullahoma

Tullahoma mayor Lane Curlee is urging city residents to “invest” in the arts and create a new council to promote Tullahoma “as the cultural center of southern middle Tennessee.”

The proposed arts council, with representatives from the visual and performing arts community, is just one of several initiatives Curlee is pushing this year in order to attract new businesses and jobs to the city.

It would be a welcomed move, if the Tullahoma government is really serious about wisely investing in the arts; and is not just planning another empty public relations campaign, at the taxpayers expense.
